The political grudge between the Meru governor and Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) seems to be nearing an end as the two warring sides are expected to hold a truce meeting on Sunday that is likely to be spearheaded by deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
The bruited meeting will include Meru members of Parliament and the Senator as they seek an end to a brutal political battle that led to months of ugly political spat and an overturned impeachment.
According to our closes sources the meeting is expected to take place in Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s backyard in Mathira, Nyeri County, a day before the MCAs embark on their set Tanzanian tour.
Confirming the rumors through a local media house, the Meru MPs chairman John Kanyuithia Mutunga (Tigania West) noted the meeting was convened after a successful peace conference with the MCAs.
“We discussed with them after the meeting last night and because they will be traveling to Arusha it was agreed that a meeting can be held along Vihiga-Nairobi or Nyeri region,” MP Mutunga noted.
Mutunga however regretted that the president and his deputy had to be involved in solving the escalated wrangles arguing that this could have been solved at the County level.
“We would have liked to solve these issues at the Meru level and would not have wanted them to escalate to the National level but all parties were not available for consultation earlier,” Mutunga told the media
On Wednesday in an interview with the press, President Ruto revealed that he is involved in efforts to resolve the political wrangles in Meru County.
Ruto was speaking as his deputy Mr Gachagua held a meeting with all Meru members of Parliament on the matter. The DP met Senator Kathuri Murungi and area MPs in Nairobi.
“We managed to do something about Meru. As we speak, there is an ongoing conversation being led by my deputy to support them politically because the governor does not have so much experience,” Ruto said.
Governor Kawira had early last month sought the intervention of President Ruto to broker peace in the county. This was before 67 out of 69 MCAs voted to impeach her on December 14, 2022.
The truce meeting comes as the mover of the impeachment motion Dennis ‘DMK’ Kiogora claimed they(MCAs) were ready for dialogue, adding that they would listen to all parties before deciding on the way forward
Ms Kawira survived impeachment after the Senate Special Committee, led by Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale, said that none of the allegations raised against Governor Mwangaza by Meru County Assembly Members could be substantiated or proved by her accusers.
Khalwale said that the Committee was investigating the Governor against allegations of nepotism, illegal appointments, incitement and bullying of other leaders, and forceful entry of the Meru County Assembly none of which could be substantiated.
