Ruto’s administration releases initial sexed semen to Meru Dairy farmers

President William Ruto’s administration has delivered an initial batch of 1,000 subsidized sexed semen doses to Meru Dairy Cooperative Union, significantly reducing the cost from Sh7,000 to Sh1,400 per dose.

This move aims to improve milk productivity and farmers’ income by encouraging the use of advanced breeding technologies.

During the 10th Meru Dairy Cooperative Union Farmers Field Day, the President had pledged to lower prices of sexed semen from Sh7,000 to Sh1,400 to help farmers earn more income and increase milk productivity.

The farmers had raised pertinent challenging issues including the high cost of sexed semen and animal feeds.

The consignment was officially handed over to the CEO and Chairman of Meru Dairy Co-operative Union Kenneth Gitonga by the Managing Director – KAGRC, Dr. Benadatte Misoi, in the presence of the Governor Mutuma M’Ethingia and the Deputy Governor Madan Linda Kiome.

The Kenya Animal Genetic Resources Centre (KAGRC) aims to distribute 100,000 doses of sexed semen annually, drive advancements in animal genetics to enhance milk yield and overall productivity.

Governor Mutuma said such initiatives directly meant to address the challenges including the high cost of animal feeds and livestock diseases such as foot and mouth disease, which affect productivity.

“This is a game changer for our farmers and the entire dairy value chain in Meru County. We greatly thank the president for helping us to come up with our own fodder industry to make our feeds. We have also received 15,000 doses of vaccines, and vaccination efforts have already begun,” Governor Mutuma said.
The Governor reached out to farmers to support the national government because, it is not through their relationship and cooperation with the national government. Meru would not benefit from the Sh 1,400 against the market prices Sh 7,000 and Sh 8,000.

The use of sexed semen is a clear signal of a strategic push towards modernizing dairy farming and boosting milk yields through advanced breeding technologies in the Country.

Mutuma said the national government had acted quickly to help resolve challenges in the Dairy sector.

Mutuma added that in 2023, President Ruto fulfilled his promise by allocating Sh 100 million to support the establishment of a Dairy feeds production plant.

He added that the President had pledged to add an additional KSh 100 million this year to enhance the same.

He noted that these achievements wouldn’t have been possible without working closely with the national government.

Meru Dairy is one of the leading dairy cooperatives in Kenya and across Africa.
