On Friday, August 30, 2024, five students from Meru Primary School were injured when police deployed tear gas in the vicinity of the school.
The officers utilized the gas to manage protests demanding the removal of Governor Kawira Mwangaza from office.
At the time of the incident, students were inside their classrooms when four canisters of tear gas were thrown, with one landing directly in a classroom during their lessons.
Headteacher Ms Eva Gichuru expressed concern, stating, “The tear gas has affected both teachers and students, with some learners fainting. These protests are impacting our school, even though we are not involved.”
Witnesses reported that the overwhelming fumes left many students and staff in shock.
According to locals, the tear gas was used against residents protesting Governor Mwangaza’s reinstatement following her impeachment.
Emergency responders from Red Cross provided first aid on the school grounds, while several affected students were transported to the hospital for further medical care.
The protests also led to significant traffic disruptions along the Makutano-Meru Town road, as frustrated residents clashed with law enforcement.
