Gachagua lauds Linturi’s tenure amid calls for new appointment
Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua defended former Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mithika Linturi, praising his contributions during his time in office.
Linturi was among several cabinet secretaries who lost their positions after President William Ruto announced the dismissal of almost his entire cabinet and initiated consultations to form a “broad-based government” in response to widespread anti-government protests.
While speaking at the Methodist Church in Kenya-Mikumbune, during the church’s 100th anniversary celebrations, Gachagua referred to Linturi as “our great son” who “performed beyond expectations.”
Gachagua emphasized that Linturi faced challenges not because of his performance but due to political dynamics.
“CS, I want to encourage you. There is a God of another chance,” Gachagua stated urging Linturi to “walk with your shoulders high”.
He acknowledged that Linturi faced political heat and even survived an impeachment motion.
“The motion was baseless and motivated by insiders with a vested interest in undermining him,” he stated, referring to the impeachment motion and allegations against Linturi that were dismissed by a parliamentary select committee..
Among those who echoed Gachagua’s sentiments was former Meru Governor Kiraitu Murungi, who expressed strong support for Linturi.
Murungi called on President William Ruto to consider appointing Linturi to another position.
“Tell the President that we love him, but we have a problem in Meru County. Linturi was equal to the task and he can even serve as an advisor to the president,” the former Governor suggested.
Murungi’s plea underscored the importance of ensuring that the region regained its representation and influence within the government.
“We want to be part and parcel of this country,” he declared.
During his tenure, Linturi achieved notable milestones in the agriculture sector, including spearheading initiatives aimed at boosting food security across the nation.
He played a pivotal role in the implementation of the National Agricultural Sector Investment Program, which sought to enhance agricultural productivity and sustainability.
Linturi also facilitated the distribution of subsidized fertilizers to farmers, ensuring they had the necessary resources to cultivate their lands effectively.
Additionally, he championed the “Kenya National Agricultural Export Strategy,” which aimed to expand the country’s agricultural exports and improve the livelihoods of farmers.
Messages of commendation for Linturi came as the former CS also addressed pressing security issues in Igembe North.
Following recent banditry attacks that left one person dead and several injured, Linturi called for increased security measures in the area, highlighting the importance of protecting communities.
