By Christine Ngitori

Governor Muthomi Njuki has spelled out his legislative agenda to the Members of the County Assembly during a State of the County Address in the County Assembly of Tharaka Nithi.

In his address, Njuki unveiled an ambitious development agenda that will transform the economic landscape and enhance the quality of life for the residents.

The Governor unveiled a series of sweeping initiatives aimed at bolstering agriculture, improving healthcare, and advancing infrastructure.

Highlighting the county’s financial progress, Governor Njuki announced a remarkable increase in revenue collected, soaring from Sh287 million in 2022/2023 to Sh417 million in the current fiscal year.

This significant growth underscores the county’s effective revenue strategies and unwavering commitment to achieving financial stability.

“This is not just a number; it represents our dedication to building a prosperous future for our people,” stated Njuki.

Central to the Governor’s development agenda is agriculture, a sector that plays a pivotal role in the county’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

“Agriculture remains at the heart of our development and transformative agendas,” Njuki reaffirmed

He emphasized the importance of value addition to agricultural products, encouraging farmers to enhance profitability through better processes and techniques.

To combat food insecurity, the Governor expressed strong support for the Certified Seed Program, designed to provide farmers with high-yield seeds and increase self-sufficiency in food production.

“We are dedicated to ensuring that our residents are well-nourished and food secure,” he assured, signaling a commitment to sustainable agricultural practices.

In a significant move to boost agricultural productivity, the county has procured soil testing equipment and plans to initiate remote scanning for 3,000 farmers, ensuring better soil health and vitality.

Equally pressing on Njuki’s agenda is the improvement of accessible healthcare throughout the county.

He announced plans for the renovation of every dispensary, ensuring vital medical services are within reach for all residents.

“Our approach to patient care is built on cost-effectiveness, with free eye clinics being established in Marimanti and surrounding areas,” Njuki said.

Plans for mobile health clinics to reach remote regions were also revealed, aimed at ensuring that no resident is left behind, regardless of their location.

The Governor further reinforced his commitment to preventive healthcare by launching a comprehensive vaccination program against common diseases.

This initiative aims to safeguard the health of the community while investing in maternal and child health services to reduce both infant and maternal mortality rates.

In a significant infrastructure development, Governor Njuki announced plans to relocate Kathwana Prison from the Central Business District (CBD) to Kabariange.

This strategic move will expand the prison’s facility from 44 acres to 62 acres, paving the way for the construction of a Level 5 hospital, a new police station, and even a stadium in the town center.

“These projects are vital to enhancing our county’s infrastructure and service delivery,” he remarked.

Acknowledging the existing challenges in service delivery due to delays in receiving equitable share allocations, Njuki called for the swift passage of the County Allocation of Revenue Act.

“We must rely on our revenue collection in the interim, but timely funding is essential to fully realize our development goals,” he emphasized, urging collaborative efforts to expedite these processes.

With a comprehensive strategy that spans agriculture, healthcare, and infrastructure, Governor Muthomi Njuki has laid a solid foundation for the future of Tharaka Nithi County.

“Together, we will drive this county towards a future of prosperity and growth,” he declared, promising substantial improvements that will benefit all residents.
