Kenya Correspondents Association condemns attacks on journalists ahead of planned protest

In a bold statement, the Kenya Correspondents Association (KCA) has slammed recent brutal attacks on journalists and threats to press freedom in Kenya.
The association has sounded alarm over a surge in violence against media personnel, urging the government to take immediate action to protect the rights of journalists.
The Association statement comes a day ahead of a planned protest by journalist to protest against attacks and shooting of their colleague during recent Gen-Z protests.
The association’s National Chairman, Hadson Araka Matara, slammed the violence, saying it is a clear attempt to undermine the country’s constitution.
“We condemn the targeting of journalists and emerging threats to media houses which constitute attempts to undermine press freedom as provided for in the constitution. We urge the government and its agencies to cease these threats and provide a supportive environment for press operations,” Mr Matara said.
Matara highlighted the recent shooting of Catherine Njeri from K24 TV in Nakuru and the abduction of veteran journalist and editor Macharia Gaitho, saying over ten journalists have been attacked, injured, or had their equipment damaged during protests.
“We are deeply concerned about the escalating attacks on journalists and the government’s hostile rhetoric towards the media. We will not tolerate any form of violence or intimidation against our members or any journalist in Kenya,” Matara said.
KCA also criticized the government’s interference in the selection process for the Media Council of Kenya (MCK) Board members, describing it as a deliberate obstruction. Matara urged the media industry to resist this trend and protect its independence.
“The trend is unacceptable and must be vigorously resisted by the media industry,” Matara asserted.
In response to these threats, KCA has vowed to support tomorrow’s planned protest by Journalists to express grievances and push back against the threats to press freedom.
Matara advised journalists to assess risks and take necessary precautions while covering ongoing protests.
Additionally, the KCA Chairperson called on media houses to respect journalists’ rights and ensure timely payment of salaries and benefits
“We call on all media houses to stop the blatant violation of the rights of journalists and pay all pending salaries and other benefits to ensure journalists live dignified lives and remain productive in their work,” he emphasized.
