MPs back CS Kindiki as Mt. Kenya East kingpin

The political dynamics of the Mt. Kenya East region have shifted after members of parliament from Meru, Tharaka Nithi, and Embu counties collectively endorsed Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki as the region’s primary spokesperson on development matters.

During a press briefing in Embu, the MPs expressed confidence in Prof. Kindiki’s ability to serve as an intermediary between them and the executive. Led by Mbeere North MP Geoffrey Ruku, the legislators announced that the Mt. Kenya East parliamentary caucus would work in unison to advance the socio-economic and political development agenda for the region.

“We have unanimously decided that Prof. Kithure Kindiki will be our link to the executive branch,” the MPs declared.

The leaders emphasized that their region would now seek development as a distinct unit, separate from Central Kenya. Historically, there has been discontent in the Mt. Kenya East region over perceived marginalization by Central Kenya, despite the region’s overwhelming support for the government in recent elections.

“This marks the beginning of our efforts to prioritize the transformation agenda for Mt. Kenya East. We recognize the importance of a strong connection with the president to expedite the region’s development goals,” stated MP Ruku.

The MPs also outlined their priorities, calling for the completion of ongoing roadworks, water projects, and electrification programs initiated under the previous administration. They underscored the political significance of the region, citing its considerable voting bloc.

“Mt. Kenya East has a sizable electorate, making us a critical player in influencing the political and developmental direction of our country. Our collective voice in the national government must not be ignored,” Ruku added.

Additionally, the leaders commended President William Ruto for appointing key figures from the region, including Prof. Kindiki, Justin Muturi, and Eric Mugaa, to cabinet positions. However, they urged the president to continue allocating more opportunities to residents of Mt. Kenya East.

“We are grateful for the positions our people have received, and we encourage the president to continue granting us more,” Ruku noted.

The press briefing was attended by several notable leaders from the region, including MPs Mpuru Aburi (Tigania East), Elizabeth Kilemia (Meru Woman Representative), John Mutunga (Tigania West), John Paul Mwirigi (Igembe South), Senator Alexander Mundigi (Embu), Bernard Muriuki (Mbeere South), Dan Kiili (Igembe Central), Gitonga Murugara (Tharaka), Julius Taitumu (Igembe North), Patrick Munene (Chuka), Pamela Njoki (Embu Woman Representative), Kareke Mbiuki (Maara), and Mugambi Rindikiri (Buuri).

This development comes amid growing political tension in the region, with some MPs recently accusing Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua of undermining President Ruto under the guise of promoting regional unity. Notably, several Meru MPs skipped Gachagua’s recent church visit in Imenti South, while a faction of five lawmakers, accompanied by National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah, attended a separate church event in Tigania West.
