UDA calls off impeachment bid against Governor Mwangaza
In a dramatic turn of events, the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) has instructed the immediate withdrawal of the impeachment motion against Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza.
In a letter dated July 19th, UDA Secretary General Cleophas Malala directed County Assembly Deputy Majority Leader Zipporah Kinya to retract the motion, citing the need for party cohesion and stability in the current socio-political climate.
Malala’s letter, addressed to Kinya and copied to Assembly Speaker Ayub Bundi, emphasized the importance of unity and collective decision-making in navigating the country’s challenges.
“UDA Party directs you to withdraw the impeachment motion against Governor Kawira Mwangaza with immediate effect, in the interest of our party’s cohesion and stability,” Malala stated.
In an exclusive interview with County Focus, Malala stressed the need for cooperation and consultation before making any decisions.
“This is not the right time to have conflict in our strongholds. We have decided to consult all leaders before any decision is made,” he said.
The UDA Secretary-General also invited Kinya for a preliminary discussion on Monday, July 21st, before briefing party leaders and convening a meeting on Thursday, July 24th, to discuss the impeachment matter.
However, Kinya dismissed Malala’s letter, insisting that the decision is not from President William Ruto who is the party leader
“That’s not the party position. My party leaders are not aware of it,” she said.
The directive comes amidst heightened socio-political tension within the county and the country at large. The impeachment motion, tabled on July 17th by Kinya, accused Governor Mwangaza of abuse of office, misappropriation, and misuse of county resources.
