Student found dead after night-long engagement with police
A body of a student at Kajiunduthi High School in Maara Sub County, Tharaka Nithi County, was Tuesday morning found in a thicket. This followed a night- long engagement between the students and police officers who had been deployed to cool down students on rampage.
The body which had physical injuries on the face was found by locals about a kilometer away from the school.
Speaking to the media, the students who sought anonymity said police started shooting in the air and lobbed tear-gas canisters to disperse them resulting in a running battle in the field.
They added that some of the students hid in the school while the others ran to the villages where most of them spent the chilly night.
Confirming the incident, Muthambi Sub-County Police Commander John Manei promised to address the media later.
Tharaka Nithi County Director of Education Bridget Wambua said she could not issue any statement to the media at the moment.
Parents who were eager to know what unfolded were forced to camp at the school entrance as they were denied entry.
They however vowed to remain at the gate until when they knew the status of their children.
They have also condemned the death of the student and faulted both the police for ‘using excess force’ in handling students.
