In a vibrant display of pomp and colour, Meru National Polytechnic celebrated its 5th graduation ceremony, marking a major milestone in its journey towards providing high-quality education and training.
The ceremony saw 5034 highly qualified students receive their Diplomas and Certificates, making them the first batch of graduates under the innovative Competency-Based Education and Training (CBET) curriculum.
Meru National Polytechnic’s Chief Principal, Mutembei Kigige, hailed the transition to CBET as a groundbreaking approach that focuses on practical skills and real-world applications.
“Today, we celebrate the fruition of a dream as we present the first cohort of competent graduates who have been trained, assessed, and certified under the CBET curriculum,” he said.
The Polytechnic has made significant strides in adopting innovative education methods, including Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL), which acknowledges the diverse backgrounds of learners and enables them to acquire formal qualifications that match their knowledge and skills.
This approach has broken down barriers in education, enhancing employability, mobility, lifelong learning, and social inclusion.
The institution has also been accredited as a Qualification Awarding Institution (QAI) by the Government, a testament to its commitment to providing high-quality education and training that meets national and international standards. With over 47 approved CBET curricula, Meru Polytechnic is well on its way to becoming a leader in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) in Kenya.
The ceremony was graced by Dr. Esther Thaara Muoria, Principal Secretary of the State Department for Technical and Vocational Training (SD-TVET), who lauded the polytechnic for aligning with the CBET module and emphasizing practical and industrial exposure.
In his remarks, the Chairperson of the Meru National Polytechnic Council, Dr. Anthony Njagi, emphasized the importance of strong industry partnerships in providing students with valuable internships, apprenticeships, and real-world project experiences.
“We ensure that our graduates are not only knowledgeable but also job-ready and adaptable to the ever-changing demands of the workforce,” he emphasized.
As Meru Polytechnic looks to the future, it is clear that its commitment to providing high-quality education and training will enable learners to acquire relevant skills that meet the needs of the job market, ultimately contributing to Kenya’s economic growth and development.
