Meru DCI officers have apprehended four suspects, including a police officer, in connection with a series of incidents that terrorized residents using a firearm.
The immediate suspect, Patrick Muriira, 35, hailing from Kianjuri Village in Imenti North, led investigators to an M16 rifle he had concealed, along with 65 rounds of ammunition.
Meru County Criminal Investigation Officer, Samuel Bett, expressed the gravity of the situation, stating, “It is unfortunate that we have lost one person. Two others, a husband and wife, are currently nursing injuries. Additionally, some residents have lost cattle, while others have seen their properties torched. DCI officers from Nairobi headquarters have joined us in this operation, providing vital intelligence that led to these successful arrests.”
Three suspects have been arraigned in court, including the police officer, who is stationed in Buuri West sub-county. Bett emphasized the need for further investigation, stating, “We have requested the court for additional time to allow our officers to apprehend all culprits involved. The arrested officers and today’s suspect will provide critical leads for ongoing investigations.”
The police officer was arrested on Monday, while his accomplices, Mathew Murungi and Bartholomeo Gitonga, remain in custody. It is still unclear whether the firearm belonged to the officer or was rented, pending forensic investigations.
Recent criminal activities spanning from August 23 to September 15 have resulted in loss of life and property theft.
“We are relieved that this gun is no longer in the hands of a criminal. It was found hidden on a neighbor’s farm,” Bett said.
The suspect reportedly operated as a boda boda rider by day and transformed into a thief at night. Bett cautioned residents to remain vigilant against individuals who may appear innocent but are, in fact, dangerous criminals lurking within the community.
Many neighbors were stunned to discover they had been living alongside a suspect. Preliminary investigations have linked the firearm to the recent atrocities, as ballistics tests have matched cartridges used in these incidents.
Bett urged unemployed youth to shun criminal activities, asserting that the government will not tolerate such behavior. “President William Ruto’s administration has introduced numerous initiatives, such as the Hustler Fund and the Youth Enterprise Fund, aimed at supporting young people.”
“I understand that many young people are struggling to find jobs, but resorting to crime is not the solution,” he added.
He called on residents to assist police in curbing insecurity by sharing crucial information. “We are aware of cattle rustling occurring in Igembe North, Tigania East, and West, where criminals are armed. We are committed to taking the necessary actions to ensure justice is served,” Bett concluded.
