Tharaka Nithi community leaders and agencies gathered today for a pivotal meeting at Kathwana County Social Hall in a bid to tackle the rising tide of illicit brews in the region. County Commissioner David Gitonga took the lead, rallying collective efforts to ensure community safety during the festive season.

As the holidays approach, security concerns are escalating, prompting Gitonga to vow an unwavering crackdown on illegal alcohol production and distribution.

“We will not rest until every resident of Tharaka Nithi is safe from the dangers of illicit brews,” he declared, highlighting the resurgence of these activities and their threat to local security.

With the festive season notorious for increased alcohol consumption, Gitonga underscored the importance of enhanced surveillance efforts to deter illegal brewing and distribution.

Plans were put in place to coordinate government initiatives, including the upcoming registration of residents for the new Taifa Care health program.

Echoing these sentiments, Tharaka Nithi Deputy Governor Nyaga Muisraeli reinforced the government commitment to protect the community, vowing to combat the sale of alcohol to minors and unlicensed vendors.

“I urge our business community to work hand-in-hand with us—together, we can ensure that alcohol isn’t sold during prohibited hours. Let’s celebrate responsibly,” Muisraeli cautioned, emphasizing the need for awareness about the potential dangers that alcohol can pose during the festive period.

NACADA County Coordinator Amos Warui joined the dialogue by advocating for ongoing partnerships with local authorities to maintain a drug-free environment.

“Parents must lead by example, and our youth must be vigilant this Christmas,” Warui stressed, pledging intensified enforcement measures against purveyors of counterfeit and illicit alcohol.

Additionally, NACADA has teamed up with the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) to implement a national plan focused on curbing alcohol abuse and promoting safe road practices during the holiday season, tackling the alarming rise in driving under the influence (DUI) incidents.

As the community gears up for celebrations, officials urged residents to enjoy the festive spirit while prioritizing safety—a message that resonated louder than ever in the fight against illicit brews.
