By Gerald Mukembu

The Meru County Drinks and Alcoholic Control Board has issued a stern warning to bar owners and alcohol traders against selling alcoholic beverages to minors, pledging strict enforcement of existing laws.

Board Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Gitonga Akubu said the county would not tolerate the sale of alcohol to anyone under the age of 18, noting that operators who flout the directive risk having their licenses revoked.

Speaking to journalists in Meru Town, Akubu emphasized that the county government will intensify inspections to ensure compliance across all sub-counties. He said the move is aimed at protecting children from exposure to alcohol and ensuring they focus on their education without unnecessary distractions.

“It is against the law to sell alcohol to minors. Any bar owner or trader caught doing so will lose their operating license immediately,” Akubu said.

He added that the crackdown aligns with Governor Isaack Mutuma’s broader efforts to promote discipline and responsibility within the alcohol industry. Akubu further noted that as Meru Town works toward achieving city status, the administration is committed to maintaining high standards of order and morality.

“The leadership of this county will not allow Meru to be known for drunkenness. We are determined to regulate the sector and ensure responsible alcohol consumption,” he said.
