Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has raised alarm over the growing menace of drug trafficking and abuse in Isiolo County, ranking it third nationwide after Mombasa and Nairobi.
Speaking in Isiolo town, CS Murkomen expressed deep concern over the rising number of drug peddlers and widespread drug usage among the youth.
“It’s quite unfortunate that most youths in Isiolo have been greatly affected by the use of drugs,” said Murkomen. “The government cannot wait any longer as the lives of innocent young people are being destroyed. We must apprehend all the drug traffickers operating in the region.”
According to the CS, hard drugs such as cannabis sativa and heroin are commonly found in the area. He linked the increase in insecurity in Isiolo not only to drug abuse but also to the proliferation of illegal firearms, terrorism, banditry, political conflicts, and livestock theft.
“Isiolo’s location as a cosmopolitan town on a major highway and at the border of conflict-prone regions has made it a hotspot for illegal arms and drug trafficking,” Murkomen explained. He further noted that poor road infrastructure in the area hampers security operations, with traffickers often using informal ‘panya routes’ to evade capture.
He called upon other relevant ministries to work closely with the Interior Ministry to improve infrastructure in order to enhance both security and the quality of life for residents.
To boost security efforts, Murkomen announced that the government will recruit about 300 National Police Reservists (NPRs) in Isiolo.
“These officers will complement our security forces, especially in remote areas. Being locals, they are familiar with the terrain and the communities, which is essential in tackling insecurity,” he said.
The CS also issued a stern warning to political leaders, particularly from Meru County, whom he accused of shielding criminals. “Some leaders have been defending individuals involved in livestock theft who collaborate with criminals from Samburu to raid Meru and Isiolo. These leaders should stop blaming the security apparatus for targeting their people,” he said.
“The government is targeting criminals, not communities. Leaders must work with, not against, our security teams,” he added.
Murkomen further warned Isiolo politicians against using the youth to stir violence during election campaigns. “We have seen youths attacking each other during political rallies, often under the influence of politicians. This will no longer be tolerated,” he stated.
Regarding the ongoing Operation Ondoa Jangili, aimed at rooting out armed criminal groups in Isiolo and Marsabit, Murkomen said it has already saddened several criminal activities and reduced the spread of illegal firearms.
“This operation is key to restoring peace in regions long troubled by violence. We are determined to ensure lasting security,” he affirmed.
