Governor Mutuma Outlines Bold Steps to Empower Meru Youth with Skills and Talent Support

By Brian Gitonga

Meru Governor Mutuma M’Ethingia has unveiled a series of programs aimed at empowering young people across the county, saying his administration is determined to equip them with practical skills, nurture their talents and create new economic opportunities.

Speaking at Kaaga Primary School, where he officially opened the 2025 Meru County Vocational Training Centre Ball Games Competition, Mutuma described the event as part of the county’s broader vision for youth empowerment.

The governor noted that Meru County is investing heavily in vocational training centers (VTCs) to prepare youth for the demands of the modern world. He highlighted that the county has disbursed 15,000 shillings per trainee each year and subsidized NITA exam fees to help more students attain formal certification.

“We are undertaking a number of programs geared towards youth empowerment. They include technical skills and vocational training,” said Mutuma.

He added that these efforts are designed to give young people skills that remain relevant, marketable, and sustainable in the evolving economy. In addition, the county aims to transform VTCs into hubs of innovation, talent incubation, and opportunity creation.

Mutuma also stressed that sports and creative arts are just as important for unlocking potential among the youth. He said that his government has supported a range of co-curricular activities, including ball games, drama festivals, film and music festivals, in efforts to nurture young talent and provide new platforms to showcase their abilities.

He praised institutions such as Ithima and Nkubu vocational training centers, which he said have represented Meru County at the national level, saying they demonstrate what targeted investment can achieve.

Mutuma also pointed out that sports should not be seen merely as a leisure activity but as a real career Mutuma. He said that in partnership with the Kenya Football Federation, the county has provided balls and uniforms to schools participating in ball games competitions in primary, junior and senior secondary schools.

In addition, Mutuma recognized the growing creative economy, stating that his administration is collaborating with national initiatives like Talanta Hela to support musicians, digital content creators and other young artists.

The governor emphasized that every youth deserves a fair chance to showcase their talent, whether on stage, on the screen or on the pitch.

“My administration is also working with the national government on initiatives like Talanta Hela to support creatives, musicians and digital content creators,” said Mutuma.

The governor reaffirmed the county government’s pledge to continue investing in programs that give Meru’s youth the tools and confidence to build their future.
