It was pomp and color as more than 2,500 graduates donned their caps and gowns at Kenya Methodist University’s (KeMU) 24th graduation ceremony, a vibrant celebration that set the stage for an inspiring call to action from eminent scholars and dignitaries.
In a compelling call to action, leading figures urged graduates to prioritize adaptability, innovation, and ongoing education in order to thrive in today’s fast-evolving technological landscape.
The University Chancellor Rev Isaya Deye, Vice Chancellor Prof. Kobia Ataya, National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula, and Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga emphasized the importance of honing relevant skills and competencies to meet the challenges posed by rapid global changes.
“Make a commitment to lifelong learning beyond your graduation as a means of fostering societal transformation in this ever-changing world. Lifelong learning will enhance your adaptability and prepare you to tackle future complexities. Engage with new ideas, challenge existing knowledge, and actively seek solutions to emerging issues,” Rev. Deye told the assembled graduates at the Meru campus.
Wetangula echoed this sentiment, pointing out that the world is undergoing significant technological, social, and economic shifts.
He urged scholars to pursue continuous education in order to remain flexible, innovative, and transformative.
“Hone your skills to address rising challenges in governance, health, education, technology, and infrastructure. Embrace adaptability and boldness to overcome obstacles in your path,” he advised.
Vice Chancellor Ataya reminded graduates of the importance of integrity and spirituality in their journey towards making meaningful contributions to society.
“Maintain your commitment to competence, honesty, and kindness, while remembering the significance of your creator. Synthesize your formal education with lifelong learning to navigate the ever-evolving global landscape, utilizing technological advancements to enhance your knowledge and skills,” he stated.
Governor Kahiga, who received an honorary PhD, offered inspiration to the younger generation to remain focused on their educational pursuits.
“Just as we regularly update our computers, our minds must also evolve with new skills. Artificial Intelligence is providing opportunities for us to read and conceptualize better. I am planning to enroll in a Bachelor’s degree in Law within the next month,” he shared.
