Karumo TTI Recognized as Top Institution in Eastern Kenya, Ranks Fifth Nationwide

Karumo Technical Training Institute (TTI) has emerged as the leading institution in Kenya’s eastern region and secured fifth place nationally, following a recent annual evaluation of technical colleges across the country.

The ranking, released last week, assessed institutions on critical criteria such as student enrollment, academic performance, and institutional stability—specifically the absence of frequent student unrest.

Speaking of the achievement, Principal Florah Kanyua credited the institute’s success to a strong culture of discipline and shared commitment among both staff and students.

“Our educators set realistic goals, and together we work towards them with determination. In November last year, we achieved a mean score of 92 percent, and we’ve consistently remained in the 80–85 percent range,” she explained.

Located approximately 23 kilometers from Meru town, Karumo TTI enjoys a quiet, distraction-free environment—an advantage in Ms. Kanyua believes it plays a crucial role in its academic success.

“Unlike institutions situated in urban centers, our remote location minimizes disruptions for learners and helps them stay focused,” she said.

Ms. Kanyua also highlighted the importance of open communication between students and administration, noting that potential issues are addressed early to avoid conflicts or strikes.

The institute is equipped with modern training facilities and staffed by educators trained under the Competency-Based Education and Training (CBET) framework, ensuring that students graduate with relevant and practical skills for the job market.

With over 7,300 students—none of whom reside on campus the institution significantly contributes to the local economy. Students rent accommodation in nearby areas and rely on local food suppliers, generating business for the surrounding community.

“Our presence here has uplifted local livelihoods. The money spent by students supports small businesses and has helped reduce poverty in the region,” Ms. Kanyua added.

Deputy Principal Mathews Nkarichia applauded the collective efforts of both staff and students, urging them to continue their pursuit of excellence.
