Lawi Imathiu honored as founding father of Kenya Methodist University
In a monumental celebration at Kenyatta Methodist University (KeMU), Rev Dr Lawi Imathiu was officially honoured as the founding father of the esteemed institution.
This ceremony recognized his tireless dedication to education and community service, illuminating his profound impact on not only the university but also the Methodist Church in Kenya and beyond.
A Journey of Faith and Commitment
The event was marked by evocative speeches that traced Rev Imathiu’s -a Bishop emeritus remarkable journey from humble beginnings in Kaaga to becoming a global influencer.
As Prof Kobia Ataya, Vice Chancellor of KeMU, highlighted, “Rev Dr Imathiu’s prayers were answered, igniting a flame within him—a resolve to dedicate his life to God and the service of humanity.”
Prof Ataya narrated Imathiu’s early years marked by health challenges, which he overcame with faith.
His quest for knowledge at Limuru Theology College shaped his path, leading to significant contributions in the Methodist Church, particularly during the 1960s when he played a pivotal role in securing the Church’s independence from British oversight.
“Dr Imathiu emerged as a key figure in this movement,” said Ataya, emphasizing his leadership and vision.
Education: The Beacon of Hope
Dr Imathiu’s profound belief in education as the “bedrock for national development” was echoed throughout the day’s proceedings.
His vision for establishing Kenya Methodist University (KeMU) was first conceived in 1996 during the Annual Methodist Conference in Mombasa, where he shared his dream of creating a Methodist university—an idea that faced criticism from some quarters.
Driven by his commitment to education and the growth of the Church, he sought a meeting with then-President Daniel Arap Moi to discuss the establishment of a private university.
“It was during this meeting that the late president revealed to Imathiu that he, too, harbored a dream of founding a private university, and together they agreed that private universities would become a reality. This was a critical turning point in making KeMU a reality,” Prof. Ataya recounted.
In his speech, Imathiu passionately articulated his ambitions for the university, saying, “our dream was to offer education in theology, business, and sciences so that our students can discover that which is yet to be unearthed.”
His emphasis on hands-on learning and innovation resonated throughout the audience, inspiring future generations to harness their potential.
“This university is not about a single region; it is a world business, a global initiative to serve humanity,” stated Imathiu during his address, reflecting his commitment to expand educational access.
Advocacy for Peace and Community Service
The event also recognized Imathiu’s dedication to peace and community service, particularly during his involvement in peace negotiations in Southern Africa.
“Through his tireless work for peace, Rev. Imathiu reminded us all that every act of kindness contributes to a larger tapestry of goodwill,” Rev Dr Samuel Kobia, Chairperson of the Board of Trustees at KeMU, mentioned that
The day was accented by the announcement of his new roles, which include serving as an ambassador for the university and mobilizing resources for its growth.
“Your duties shall be ensuring the university is not just an institution, but a vibrant community that contributes to society,” Rev. Kobia stated, affirming Imathiu’s ongoing commitment to KeMU.
Embracing a Visionary Legacy
Bishop Isaiah Deye, Chancellor of KeMU, beautifully encapsulated the event’s sentiment by lauding Rev Imathiu.
“The future is here. Leaders are visionaries who dare to dream, and those dreams illuminate pathways for future generations. Today, we gather not only to celebrate the present but to honor the extraordinary vision of Rev Imathiu, whose unwavering guidance and inspirational leadership have been pivotal in bringing us to this remarkable moment,” Bishop Deye noted
The ceremony culminated in a heartfelt tribute to Imathiu, reflecting the collective gratitude of the university’s community.
“Rev. Dr. Imathiu’s life is a lighthouse, shining brightly, guiding future generations toward a path of service and excellence. Let us honor his legacy by fostering the spirit of education and service in our own lives,” Prof Ataya summarized the essence of the gathering
