Meru and Tharaka Nithi react to President Ruto’s cabinet dismissal
By Harun Mugambi
President William Ruto’s recent decision to dissolve his cabinet, sparing only a select few, has set tongues wagging and emotions running high in the regions of Meru and Tharaka Nithi.
The swift dismissal of Cabinet Secretaries and the Attorney-General has stirred a potpourri of reactions from residents and leaders alike, painting a canvas of diverse sentiments and expectations in the wake of this political earthquake.
Mixed reactions
Meru’s residents and leaders have expressed a mix of gratitude, support, and disappointment.
Outgoing Cabinet Secretary for Agriculture and Livestock Development, Mithika Linturi, thanked President Ruto for the opportunity to serve, highlighting his achievements in the agricultural sector.
“I’m profoundly thankful to H.E. President William Ruto for the trust and confidence he placed in me… I’m pleased with the achievements we’ve made so far in the agricultural sector,” Linturi said.
Meru Senator Kathuri Murungi called for patience and trust in the President’s decision-making process, urging him to be given time to consult with all relevant parties before appointing a new Cabinet.
“Let’s allow him [the President] enough time to check those who he can work with… As per the constitution, the President has the authority to remove a cabinet member or the entire cabinet. It is important to allow him adequate time to consult with all relevant parties before appointing a new cabinet,” Murungi stated.
Plea for Kindiki’s reappointment
In Tharaka Nithi, residents have strongly reacted to the dismissal of Kithure Kindiki, Cabinet Secretary for Interior.
People living with disabilities pleaded for his reappointment, citing his dedication and peaceful approach.
“Kithure Kindiki is the only CS I will miss. Ruto could have retained him. He is among the first leaders who preach peace and oppose police brutality. Gen Z musameheni huyu [forgive him],” Mike Makarina said on behalf of people living with disabilities.
Njuri Ncheke elders, influential cultural leaders from the region, defended Kindiki and Inspector General of Police Japhet Koome against criticism over their handling of protests.
“Those criticizing CS for Interior Prof. Kithure Kindiki and the Inspector General of Police Japhet Koome over the way police handled protests should desist from doing so as the majority of police officers conducted themselves professionally,” they stated.
Kindiki’s Response
As the nation awaits a new cabinet announcement, Kithure Kindiki remains silent on his removal. Many in Tharaka Nithi and beyond are eagerly awaiting his response, hoping for insight into his future plans.
With extensive consultations set to begin soon, Kenyans are keenly watching how President Ruto will assemble his new Cabinet.
