Meru County Assembly suspends impeachment motion

Meru County Assembly Speaker Ayub Bundi has announced that the Assembly will adjourn its session, following a court order halting the impeachment debate against Governor Kawira Mwangaza.

The court ruling, issued by Judge Linus Kassan, comes after Governor Mwangaza challenged the impeachment process, citing it as flawed and driven by political opponents.

In a statement, Speaker Bundi acknowledged receipt of the court notice and pledged to respect the law, saying, “We will not violate the court’s directive. We will wait for the court’s decision on Monday, July 29th, 2024.”

The move is a significant setback for the MCAs, who had sought to impeach Mwangaza for alleged gross violations of the Constitution, national and county laws, and abuse of office.

Ten MCAs who initially signed in favour of the proposed motion have also made a U-turn, asking the mover to withdraw the motion and allow for dialogue between the two arms of government.

Meru County Assembly was served with a court order earlier today halting the impeachment debate against Governor Kawira Mwangaza, which was set to take place.

This is after Judge Linus Kassan issued the ruling on Wednesday, pending a decision on a case filed by Mwangaza challenging the impeachment process.

“The impeachment process is halted Pending my ruling and since this is a matter of public interest, the rulings will be delivered on Monday 29th July 2024 via email to all parties,” the Judge ruled.

The orders were availed by Mwangaza’s lawyers under high-security today at the County Assembly.

Governor Mwangaza had sought to prevent the MCAs from pursuing her impeachment, arguing that the motion is flawed and driven by her political opponents.
