Meru MCAs rally behind Kindiki as Gachagua faces impeachment
By Gerald Mukembu
In a dramatic turn of events that could redefine the political landscape of Kenya, Meru County MCAs have thrown their weight behind Interior CS Kithure Kindiki as a frontrunner to replace the beleaguered Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
The overwhelming majority vote in the National Assembly last week approved Gachagua’s impeachment, setting the stage for a two-day trial in the Senate, which will make the final decision. Gachagua faces 11 charges, including corruption, inciting ethnic divisions, and undermining government—allegations he vehemently denies. The controversy is further compounded by a recent fallout with President William Ruto, who has remained conspicuously silent throughout this turbulent chapter.
Leading the charge, Majority Leader Patrick Mutuma, alongside more than 50 MCAs, did not mince their words while addressing the media.
“We need serious performers in the calibre of Prof. Kindiki. This country is thirsty for a leader who can unite it and drive the Kenya Kwanza manifesto to fruition,” declared Mutuma.
The unmistakable momentum behind Kindiki was echoed by MCA Mwenda Kiriinya, who pointed out that public sentiment is overwhelmingly in favour of the Interior CS.
“Pollsters have put him at the top, and the people want him,” Kiriinya stated passionately. His remarks illustrated Kindiki’s unyielding support among various factions, with 48 MPs from the Mt. Kenya region also advocating for his appointment.
“We have seen leadership qualities in Kindiki, and he embodies the symbol of unity that this country desperately needs. We urge President William Ruto to make the right choice and appoint CS Kindiki,” Kiriinya added
This unexpected endorsement has set the stage for what could be a historic shake-up in Kenya’s political hierarchy.
Meru MCAs assert that Kindiki’s appointment would not only heal the divisions within the ruling coalition but also invigorate the Kenyans’ hope for effective governance.
“Our unity as Meru MCAs reflects a common goal,” Mutuma emphasized. “In 2022, Kindiki was the first priority pick for Deputy President. How he was sidelined for Gachagua remains a mystery, but now is the time to rectify that oversight,” he continued, emphasizing Kindiki’s potential as a Kingpin for the Central region.
Adding to the growing chorus of support, Agnes Karimi of the Mbus Party delivered an impassioned proclamation: “Kindiki is not only a capable leader; he is a national leader-not driven by tribal politics or corruption. He stands for unity and development, and with him at the helm, Kenya will be secure and prosperous.”
