Munya criticizes CS Kindiki over cattle rustling and killings in Meru

By Gerald mukembu

Former Meru Governor and Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Peter Munya has harshly criticized Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki for the escalating cattle rustling and violence affecting the Nyambene region.

Munya recounted several incidents where bandits have attacked herders, stealing livestock with impunity, yet he noted a lack of government action in response.

“Our people have been made poor. There are constant burials resulting from banditry attacks. We cannot stand by and watch our community suffer due to a government that is indifferent to their plight. Insecurity was significantly lower when I was governor and CS for Agriculture,” Munya stated after inaugurating an office in Nturuba, Tigania East, Meru.

He further criticized local MPs, claiming they are merely “stooges” who pass oppressive legislation, such as the 2024 Finance Bill and the impeachment of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, without due consideration.

“Our MPs have been reduced to mere yes-men; they show no regard for the concerns of the Mwananchi. It’s shocking that they voted in favor of the detrimental Finance Bill. Why stoop so low instead of engaging with reality? They are now even trying to extend the term of elected officials from five to seven years,” Munya expressed.

Munya also targeted his political rival Mithika Linturi, questioning Linturi’s capability to lead the Meru County government in the 2027 elections due to his dismissal from a previous Cabinet position.

Linturi has, in the past, attributed the political turmoil in Meru to Munya, who supported Governor Kawira Mwangaza’s 2022 campaign.

Munya issued a one-week ultimatum to Governor Kawira Mwangaza to halt the establishment of a restaurant at Muthara Level Four Hospital, labeling it a public health risk.

“The hospital board has allowed a restaurant to operate within the premises, which violates the Public Health Act. The governor must stop this project, as it poses a risk for both public health and the potential diversion of hospital supplies,” Munya asserted.
