Police shoot bar owner in Tharaka Nithi

Police are investigating an incident in which a bar owner was shot and injured in a confrontation at Makutano, Tharaka Nithi County.

The incident happened Monday morning when a group of police officers had gone for night patrol and in the exercise came across a bar operating beyond stipulated hours.

The officers on patrol went to Kismart Bar and ordered the management to close it.

In the process, a confrontation broke out between the officers and the furious owner who accused the officers of harassment.

According to the police, the man was armed with a panga and tried to close the bar with few revelers inside.

This prompted one of the officers to shoot, injuring him in the stomach.

The victim identified as Patrick Murithi, 33, was rushed to Nkubu hospital where he was admitted in stable condition.

The officer involved in the shooting was disarmed and his rifle was kept as an exhibit as the probe into the shooting goes on.
