The Public Service Commission (PSC) has clarified the mandatory retirement ages for academic staff working in public universities and research institutions.
According to the commission, Professors will now retire at 70 years, while Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) holding the same position will retire at 75 years.
The PSC also outlined retirement timelines for other academic ranks:
- Senior Lecturers will retire at 65 years, while PWDs in this category will retire at 70 years.
- Assistant Lecturers will retire at 60 years, which aligns with the standard public service retirement age.
The move is expected to streamline career progression in universities while allowing institutions to retain highly experienced professors for a longer period. PSC noted that the policy aims to balance institutional experience, mentorship of younger scholars, and opportunities for new academics entering the profession.
Public universities and research institutions are expected to implement the directive as part of broader public service human resource guidelines.
