Cabinet Secretary for Sports, Hon. Salim Mvurya, on Thursday conducted an inspection tour of Kinoru Stadium as the facility prepares for official handover to the Meru County Government.
Speaking during the visit, CS Mvurya reaffirmed the government’s commitment to nurturing talent and upgrading sports infrastructure, in line with President William Ruto’s development agenda.
“I am here under the directive of President Ruto to oversee the upgrade of Kinoru Stadium. This initiative aligns with the President’s manifesto and his commitment to empowering the youth through sports,” Mvurya said. “Meru is a powerhouse of talent, and enhancing this facility will help us identify and nurture that potential.”

He was received by Meru County Executive for Sports, Elias Murega, and the CEC for Legal Affairs and Public Service Management, Marius Maranya.
Maranya said that once upgraded, the stadium will serve as a hub for scouting and training young athletes, enhancing public fitness and encouraging mass participation in sports.
Mvurya noted that additional funding will be allocated to elevate the stadium to international standards, enabling it to host both national and international competitions. He emphasized that the VIP section, turf, lighting, and other amenities must be upgraded to meet these standards.
“We expect the stadium to be considered for future events, including AFCON matches. Technical officers will conduct a comprehensive assessment, and tendering is expected to commence by June 2025,” he added.
Murega highlighted several areas requiring improvement before the handover, scheduled for August this year.
“We lack essential features such as proper irrigation systems, quality turf, and seating. These must be addressed,” he said. “We thank the President for his support and pledge our full cooperation with the national government.”
He also appealed for the establishment of sports academies in the county to further bolster talent development.
