Student protests disrupt businesses in Chuka
By Christine Ngitori
Protest by students from Chuka University on the Meru-Nairobi Highway severely disrupted local businesses and halted transportation, following a tragic accident that claimed the life of a fellow student.
The students called for immediate government intervention, highlighting the frequent accidents occurring near the campus due to a lack of essential safety features, such as speed bumps, crosswalks, and a flyover.
“We are not here to die; we are here to learn,” Jack Kadere a student leader expressed, voicing the frustrations of students who have witnessed friends and classmates fall victim to hazardous road conditions.
Despite repeated appeals to both the county government and the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA), their calls for enhanced safety measures have gone largely unanswered.
In response to the tragic incidents, the Vice-Chancellor extended condolences to the affected families and emphasized the university’s commitment to student safety, stating, “Safety must come first.”
