Crisis: Meru Deputy Governor, Senator lambast Governor Mwangaza’s leadership

By Gerald Mukembu

A governance crisis has emerged in Meru, as Deputy Governor Mutuma M’Ethingia and Senator Kathuri Murungi have publicly criticized Governor Kawira Mwangaza for what they describe as leadership incompetence that has left the county in disarray.

Senator Murungi expressed that among the three previous governors who have led the county, Mwangaza’s tenure stands out as the most troubling.

“I believe I am the best fit to restore Meru’s lost glory. I’ve committed to lead a coalition of leaders with a shared vision to uplift Meru. Right now, the county is in a dire situation,” he remarked.

Deputy Governor M’Ethingia echoed Murungi’s sentiments, claiming that Mwangaza has consistently undermined his efforts to safeguard county funds.

“We are indeed in a deep crisis. My hope is that divine intervention will prevent the county from deteriorating further,” he stated.

He highlighted the alarming rates of teenage pregnancies in the county, emphasizing that education is a key tool in combatting this issue.

“Empowering our youth through education is crucial. It levels the playing field between the rich and the poor. A child’s future should not be determined by their background,” he added.

Looking ahead, Murungi has announced his intention to run for governor in the 2027 general elections.

“We are facing a complete governance crisis. I have heard the voices of the people and have been attentive to their needs. I will serve all the residents of Meru, which is why I am vying for the governor’s position,” he said.

In a bid to support development across the county, Murungi has introduced a bill in the Senate aimed at establishing anonymous funds that would allocate resources to Ward Development Funds for all 47 counties.
