Youths protest against Meru County Assembly financial irregularities and attacks on Governor
Tension ran high in Meru County on Tuesday as a swarm of angry youths took to the streets, protesting against the financial irregularities and perceived attacks on Governor Kawira Mwangaza.
The protesters carried colorful placards and chanted slogans calling for accountability and transparency in the County Assembly’s financial dealings.
“This is not about politics, it’s about accountability and respecting our Governor. They should give our governor ample time to work for the people of Meru. We also want our MCAs to serve us with integrity. We will not stand idly by while they are misusing public funds,” Eliud Mwiti, a protester said.
They accused the Members of County Assembly (MCAs) of embezzling public funds and demanded an immediate end to the alleged corruption.
This comes after a recent report by the Controller of Budget, which revealed that MCAs had spent a staggering Sh28 million on frequent trips to Arusha, Tanzania. The report sparked outrage among the youth, who see it as a clear example of wasteful spending and mismanagement.
The protesters also expressed their support for Governor Mwangaza, who has been at the receiving end of attacks from some MCAs.
They accused the MCAs of trying to undermine her authority and prevent her from delivering on her campaign promises.
The youth warned the MCAs against any further attempts to attack the governor, saying that such actions would only fuel more unrest and instability in the county.
The protest comes at a time when rumors are circulating about a plot to impeach Governor Mwangaza..
