Senator Kathuri calls for justice after dual murders linked to land dispute in Igembe

By Gerald Mukembu

Meru Senator Kathuri Murungi has called for comprehensive investigations into the recent murders of two individuals in the Kirunyu area of Athiru Rujiine, located within the Igembe Central constituency.

Following the tragic killings of Morris Kimathi, also known as Kimathi Mwonyo, and Robert Mutuma, Senator Kathuri highlighted the rising tensions and violence stemming from an ongoing land ownership conflict in the region.

“Local residents are demanding updates on the investigation into the murders of Mr. Kimathi Mwonyo and Mr. Mutuma. They seek to know if anyone has been arrested, charged, or prosecuted, as well as the government’s efforts to mitigate tensions between the conflicting parties and find a lasting resolution to the land dispute,” stated Kathuri.

The senator also expressed concern over recent violence in Antubetwe E Kiongo Ward, which has resulted in one death, numerous injuries, crop destruction, and property damage.

In addition, Kathuri appealed to the Ministry of National Security, Defence, and Foreign Relations regarding the alarming increase in banditry and cattle rustling incidents that have led to fatalities and significant livestock theft in Igembe North, Igembe Central, Tigania East, Tigania West, and Buuri constituencies.

“What are the ministry’s plans to recover the thousands of stolen cattle and goats through a comprehensive operation involving the Ministry of Defence and other security forces? Will there be a permanent military presence as seen in the North Rift region? Additionally, is the government considering compensation for families affected by loss of life and stolen livestock?” asked Kathuri.
