Dr Sarah Kilemi, the spouse to former Education Minister and Tigania West MP Kilemi Mwiria, has called on Meru leaders to engage in constructive dialogue to address the county’s pressing issues.
In her remarks, Dr Kilemi emphasized the importance of fostering peace and respect within Meru County, citing that continuous conflicts gradually undermine Ameru culture. The ongoing tensions between Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza and county MCAs, which have persisted since 2021, underscore this concern.
The MCAs have successfully impeached Governor Mwangaza three times, with the latest instance occurring on August 21.
However, the Senate has intervened on two occasions to reinstate her. Following her impeachment, Mwangaza sought legal recourse in the High Court, which recently suspended her removal from office. This decision has contributed to ongoing political instability and raised questions about judicial influence in executive affairs.
As she prepares to run for Woman Representative in the 2027 general elections, Dr. Kilemi stated that politics should not be adversarial.
Notably, she referenced President William Ruto’s recent olive branch to opposition leader Raila Odinga, highlighting the need for unity even after the tumultuous 2022 elections.
“We cannot afford to diminish the Ameru culture that has traditionally valued peace and respect. In our youth, if there was a disturbance, the entire community would come together to help. Nowadays, people often remain indifferent even in times of crisis,” Kilemi observed.
She urged political supporters to embrace tolerance rather than hostility, stressing that candidates should exemplify civility.
“There should be no animosity. All candidates, along with their supporters, must conduct themselves with dignity. Women have been empowered and are seen as pillars of the community,” she added.
Kilemi called on national leaders to take action to lower the prices of essential commodities and fuel to alleviate the hardships currently faced by Kenyans.
