Crackdown uncovers 433 hazardous gas cylinders in Tharaka Nithi County

In a major operation, a multi-agency security team and the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) have unearthed a shocking case of illegal gas supplies in Tharaka Nithi County. The operation, conducted at Baraka Gas Point, a supplier operating without licenses, resulted in the recovery of 433 assorted gas cylinders, accessories, and stickers.

The crackdown follows a tip-off from concerned members of the public who reported a gas refilling station operating from a private residence. Tharaka Nithi County Commissioner David Gitonga, who led the operation, expressed concerns about the dangers posed by such unlicensed businesses.

“These operations not only put the lives of residents at risk but also pose a significant danger to nearby schools,” said Commissioner Gitonga. “We urge the public to remain vigilant and report any information about illegal businesses that threaten public safety.”

The County Commissioner assured the public that authorities have identified those involved in the business and are conducting investigations to ensure that all operators possess the necessary licenses.

EPRA’s Manager of Surveillance and Enforcement, Silas Cheboi, condemned the illegal gas refilling business, emphasizing the severe risks it posed to public safety. “As EPRA, we license businesses under strict conditions, prioritizing safety. We do not permit operations in residential areas. Expired gas cylinders must be sent to factories for testing,” he said.

Cheboi praised the community for their vigilance and cooperation in highlighting these dangerous practices and assured residents that stringent surveillance would be maintained to prevent similar activities from continuing.

Commissioner Gitonga warned those involved in similar businesses that their days are numbered, as EPRA is committed to taking decisive action against unlicensed operators.
