A beacon of hope: The Good Shepherd Sisters’ commitment to compassion
By Harun Mugambi
In Meru County lies a sanctuary of compassion and unwavering dedication, the Good Shepherd Sisters, who run Good Shepherd Program Meru.
Amidst the challenges that often cast shadows over the community, this charitable organization stands tall as a beacon of hope, illuminating the lives of those in need with their tireless efforts and boundless empathy.
During our visit to the Good Shepherd Sisters’ office, we meet Sr Rosemary Karutani who grants us a rare glimpse into the inner workings and profound ethos of their organization.
“Our mission is to be a reconciling presence of Jesus the Good Shepherd,” Sister Rosemary the former Director of Good Shepherd Program articulates the core mission and vision of the organization with her voice brimming with conviction, echoing the timeless call to serve the marginalized and the vulnerable.
The genesis of their noble endeavour is rooted in inspiration drawn from the compassionate spirit of the Good Shepherd himself.
“Our mission is inspired by the Spirit of the Good Shepherd Jesus who leaves the 99 to go for the lost and vulnerable One,” Sister Rosemary reveals, painting a picture of their profound spiritual underpinning of their work.
The work of their outreach programs is vast and multifaceted, encompassing not just material support, but also holistic empowerment. From forming savings groups, and microloans and providing financial literacy to offering educational support and necessities, the Good Shepherd Sisters leave no stone unturned in their quest to break the shackles of poverty and foster lasting change in Meru and beyond.
As Sister Rosemary painted a vivid picture of their impact, her words resonated with a palpable sense of pride and accomplishment.
“We have seen children who came to us at a tender age and very vulnerable complete their studies and secure jobs both within and outside the country,” she shares each success story, a testament to the transformative power of compassion and perseverance.
Yet, amidst their triumphs, the Good Shepherd Sisters confront formidable challenges, chief among them being the perennial struggle for resources and financial support. Undeterred, they rally their community through initiatives like Harambee fundraisers and the sale of handmade liquid soap, embodying the spirit of resilience and solidarity.
In their pursuit of sustainability, the Good Shepherd Sisters envision a future where their programs thrive independently, rooted in a foundation of self-reliance and empowerment. Transparency and accountability serve as guiding principles, ensuring that every action taken is imbued with integrity and honesty.
Collaboration lies at the heart of their endeavours, with partnerships forged with local authorities, government offices, and fellow charitable organizations. Together, they form a formidable alliance against the tide of adversity, united in their shared mission to uplift the marginalized and restore dignity to the downtrodden.
Even as our encounter comes to a close, Sister Rosemary offers a glimpse into the future, filled with hope and anticipation.
“We will be celebrating the birthday of our foundress St. Mary Euphrasia on 31st July,” she revealed, a beacon of light shining amidst the challenges of the present.
In the narrative of the Good Shepherd Sisters, each chapter is a testament to the transformative power of compassion, resilience, and unwavering faith. Through their tireless efforts, they continue to illuminate the path toward a brighter and more compassionate future for all.
