Meru traders issue ultimatum to Governor Kawira over water and electricity shortages

Meru County is bracing for possible demonstrations next week as traders from major markets in the region demand immediate action to resolve the ongoing water and electricity shortages.
The traders, who are fed up with the lack of basic amenities, have issued a stern ultimatum to Governor Kawira Mwangaza, giving her until Monday to address their grievances.
The traders, who met with local MCAs Caleb Kibuko and Mwenda Ithili, vowed to stop paying taxes and take to the streets if their demands are not met. They are seeking a swift resolution to the crisis that has left businesses struggling to operate.
“We have had enough of these disruptions. We will camp at the governor’s office if our demands are not met. We cannot continue to pay for our own security and operate without electricity and water.” said Samuel Gitonga, a trader at Makutano Market
The traders have also called upon the youth, popularly known as Gen Z, to join their protest.
“We will sell from the governor’s gate if she does not listen to our demands,” said Kendi, a businesswoman from Makutano.
The issue of water disconnections by MEWASS, which operates under the county government, has added to the traders’ frustration.
“The governor should listen to the people’s pleas and take immediate action,” said MCA Mwenda Ithili.
Area MCA Caleb Mutethia echoed the traders’ concerns, stressing the need for the county to install electricity and water facilities to ensure the smooth operation of businesses.
“I urge the governor to listen to these traders and resolve their issues promptly,” he said.
