Njuki to construct multi-million Marigiti market in Chuka
By Christine Ngitori
In collaboration with the National Government, Tharaka Nithi County Governor Muthomi Njuki is set to initiate the construction of a multi-million modern Marigiti market in Chuka town.
Governor Njuki announced that the new market will feature a three-storey building designed to provide more space for traders, improve their working environment, and enhance their economic conditions.
During his visit to traders temporarily relocated while construction is underway, Njuki, accompanied by area Member of County Assembly (MCA) Murithi Gaturo, pledged to award contracts for the making of County Council uniforms, revenue collection officers’ attire, and curtains would be awarded to seamstresses operating within the Marigiti market. He noted that this initiative will uplift the livelihoods of local artisans.
“I am incredibly grateful to meet with our traders today. Your contributions are vital to our county’s revenue collection. From this point forward, there will be no need to send for suits or uniforms from Nairobi. All County Revenue Collection attire and curtains will be sourced from the skilled seamstresses at Marigiti market,” Njuki stated.
MCA Gaturo took the opportunity to request the governor to reduce rental fees and taxes for the traders.
He expressed his appreciation for Governor Njuki’s ongoing commitment to the county’s development, despite the budget constraints posed by the national treasury.
“I am thankful to our governor for this project, which will create more trading space. We are fully supportive of his development initiatives and appreciate his efforts to address the challenges facing our traders,” Gaturo remarked.
In addition to the market construction, Njuki promised to enhance security by installing CCTV cameras, hiring additional security personnel, and improving electricity and water supply.
“I understand the challenges you are facing, but let’s not forget how difficult it was during my time as an MP with little to no electricity or amenities. I assure you that we will provide added security to protect your businesses around the clock. We will also bring Wi-Fi and install CCTV cameras to help minimize theft and easily track down any culprits,” Njuki addressed the traders.
He emphasized that the new market will facilitate easier access for customers to a variety of goods.
“To support you during the construction phase, I am announcing a temporary tax reduction of 50% on your previously paid taxes until the new building is completed,” Njuki declared.
He concluded by sharing that plans are being developed to create more opportunities as the market upgrade progresses.
