Senators have opted for a House plenary to handle Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza impeachment settling for the route that sent home former Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu and Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko.
The Embattled Meru Governor will now face the whole Senate after a majority of Senators voted to shoot down a motion tabled by Senate Minority Whip Ole Kina for the establishment of an 11-member Special Committee to handle his proposed impeachment.
Ole Kina argued that the senators will have the ultimate decision after the 11-member committee tables its report.
“You and I will have the opportunity to make the final decision,” he said insisting that it is not the work of the senators to impeach a governor. The governor is impeached at the county and not at the Senate,” the minority whip said
The senator said impeachment is a very painful process that requires a governor to be heard.
However, some senators including those from Mt Kenya East backed a whole house to probe the allegations.
“Let all the 67 senators make a decision,” Embu Senator Mundi Mundigi said.
Murang’a Senator Joe Nyutu said that given that the governor is being impeached for the second time, they should go the plenary way. ”This is like the Meru MCAs are appealing to the Senate,” he said.
The Senate rejected the motion seeking to establish an 11-member committee to investigate the impeachment of Governor Kawira with majority opting for a full house.
The embattled governor is facing impeachment after 59 Meru MCAs voted to remove the county chief accusing her of violating national and county laws.
The impeachment motion was tabled by the Majority leader Evans Mawira and was supported by 59 out of 69 MCAs. 10 members were absent during the voting on Wednesday, October 25.
The besieged governor was impeached for the second time within 10 months.
